Dissolved oxygen saturation is crucial for gas bladder inflation in turquoise killifish (Nothobranchius furzeri)

چکیده
Abstract Providing optimal conditions for early-life gas bladder inflation of captive fish is one the biggest challenges in culture. It also applies to laboratory fishes. Turquoise killifish ( Nothobranchius furzeri Jubb, 1971) a popular research model biogerontology due its short lifespan. Annual culture frequently suffer from an inability inflate their which may stem suboptimal environmental captivity. Here, we investigate (1) effect dissolved oxygen (DO) saturation and (2) access water surface on hatching success turquoise killifish. We further histologically examine development primordial form full inflation. In accordance with physoclistous nature killifish, not necessary found that was highest treatment constant or decreasing DO saturation. contrast, proportion larvae inflated bladders oversaturated (130%) induced by addition tablet. Larvae within 2 48 h post-hatching. These findings represent major step toward solution persistent problem this increasingly important organism.

Transposon-Mediated Transgenesis in the Short-Lived African Killifish Nothobranchius furzeri, a Vertebrate Model for Aging
The African killifish Nothobranchius furzeri is the shortest-lived vertebrate that can be bred in captivity. N. furzeri comprises several wild-derived strains with striking differences in longevity ranging from 3 to 9 months, which makes it a powerful vertebrate model for aging research. The short life cycle of N. furzeri should also facilitate studies on adult traits that are specific to verte...

BACKGROUND A challenge in age research is the absence of short-lived vertebrate model organisms. The turquoise killifish Nothobranchius furzeri has an exceptionally short lifespan of 4-10 months depending on the strain. Thus, it possesses the shortest known maximum lifespan of a vertebrate species that can be bred in captivity. RESULTS Here we show the successful introduction of DNA and RNA m...

The short-lived killifish Nothobranchius furzeri inhabits ephemeral ponds in southeastern Africa and is characterized by rapid growth and early sexual maturation. With respect to the molecular, cellular, and integrative traits of aging, N. furzeri shows significant similarities to mammals, including humans. Recently, reference sequences for the N. furzeri genome have been published. Also, metho...
متن کاملExtremely short lifespan in the annual fish Nothobranchius furzeri.
Evolutionary theories of senescence postulate that lifespan is determined by the age-dependent decrease in the effects of natural selection. Factors that influence survival and reproduction at early life stages have a larger impact on fitness than factors that influence later life stages. According to these views, selection for rapid sexual maturation and a steep age-dependent decrease in fitne...
